Army Male Officer Service (ASU) &
Dress Blue Uniform Center

Marlow White has set up this page as a resource for Officers of the U.S. Army who are looking for information pertaining to the Service (Class A) & Dress Blue Uniform. It is meant to summarize applicable Army Uniform Regulationsbut please note that as of March 2008, the Army has NOT published a change to AR 670-1. Should any of you receive notice that the change to AR 670-1 has been published, please let us know.

All potential changes pertaining to the uniform change are shown in red. Note that these changes are at this point tentative, based on an interim announcement, and are not yet authorized or confirmed by a published change to AR 670-1.

Dress Blue Uniform Change Update (6 Mar 08): GEN Casey has commented recently that an announcement concerning the Dress Blue Uniform Change is likely to occur early this summer. Our guess is that such an announcement would be on June 14 (Army's Birthday) as previous major uniform changes have been announced on that date. Currently, the "Class A" version of the Dress Blue is not implemented and the Class A Green Uniform is still in effect.  Marlow White is NOT a member of the Army Uniform Board; however, the industry's expectations are that the Army's Dress uniform will become a variation of the current Dress Blue Uniform.

We recognize that our Soldier-Clients will want to make wise purchasing decisions ahead of the pending uniform change. One of our roles at Marlow White is to function as an information center for you - we encourage you to sign up for our newsletter to stay informed!

This page is divided into the following sections:

Occasion for Wear:

The Army Service Dress Blue Uniform is worn (note that this entire paragraph is based on the interim announcement, and not a published change to AR 670-1):

  • Year-round
  • As an optional dress uniform (currently) when worn with the white shirt and black bow tie
  • As a replacement for the Army Green Service Uniform in its Class A and B forms

The Dress Blue Uniform is worn (currently detailed by AR 670-1):

  • As an optional uniform (it is mandatory for active-duty officers)
  • Year-round
  • As the equivalent of a civilian tuxedo when worn with black bow tie (after retreat)
  • As an informal dress uniform when worn with a black 4-in-hand tie
  • On duty as prescribed by the local commander
  • For social functions of a general or official nature, before or after retreat
  • On other appropriate occasions. Examples include:
    • Funerals
    • Memorial services
    • Weddings
    • Inaugurals
    • Parades on national or state holidays
    • Parades or ceremonies in which a United States military unit of any component is taking part
    • Other occasions of ceremony

While AR670-1 states that the black bow tie is worn only after retreat, in practice Soldiers wear the black bow tie during very formal afternoon events, such as weddings, especially when the event extends into the evening hours.

Service Blue Uniform Variations:

The Service Dress Blue Uniform [pending] can be worn on more formal occasions with different accessories.

When worn with a white shirt and black bow tie the Service  Blue Uniform becomes the Dress Blue Uniform. When worn with the gray uniform shirt, we expect the Service Dress Blue uniform will be worn as Class B's (coat off) or Class A's (coat on).
