Occasion for Wear (describes when to wear the Army Blue Mess Uniform)
The Blue Mess Uniform is worn year-round for black tie functions and corresponds to a civilian tuxedo. The Blue Evening Mess
Uniform is the most formal uniform worn by Army personnel and corresponds to the civilian “white tie and tails.” The
following are appropriate occasions for personnel to wear the Army Blue Mess and Blue Evening Mess Uniforms:
Social functions of a general or official nature, held after retreat.
All private, formal social functions held after retreat.
In practice, however, Soldiers wear Mess Uniforms during very formal afternoon events, such as weddings, especially when the event extends into the evening hours
Items which can be required by the Local Commander. Unless required or prohibited by the Local Commander, the items are considered optional and can be worn at the discretion of the individual.
The Blue Mess Uniform can be worn on more formal occasions with different accessories.
Blue Evening Mess Uniform
Worn for evening functions when civilians normally wear white ties and tails
The black bow tie, pleated shirt, gold cuff links and studs, and black cummerbund are removed from the uniform for this variation. The Blue Mess Jacket Uniform is modified to add the following items:
